Emergency preparedness

It's important for providers to be ready for emergencies and disasters. Making an emergency plan ahead of time and practicing it regularly helps to protect the health and safety of clients and staff.

There are various kinds of emergencies that can happen. Natural disasters like earthquakes or landslides, man-made emergencies such as violence or terrorism, and localized events like a client having an allergic reaction or medical issue. Providers need to train staff and prepare clients to handle different emergency situations effectively.

In the case of a life-threatening medical emergency, providers should be prepared to contact emergency services at 9-1-1.

Be Ready Utah has a lot of information and resources about preparing for emergencies.  The Department of Health and Human Services Division of Population Health website also contains information that may be useful for day-to-day situations, such as a client having an allergic reaction or experiencing a seizure. The information on this page was developed specifically for school nurses, but may be adapted for use in your program.
